CD

Around this time 25 years ago, the world’s first compact disc was produced at a Philips factory in Germany, sparking a whole new revolution in technology.

The Compact Disc(CD) was jointly developed by the engineers at Philips and Sony. The first ever CD produced was “The Visitors” by Abba. I still remember the day when we got our first CD player with a couple of audio CDs for Christmas. I used to spend hours gazing at the vibrant colours that reflected of it and wondered how it could hold so much information embedded in a 1.2 mm thin format.

Today we use the CD as a common format to store, data, audio and video. CD writers have become standard, and today we have  advanced to DVD and Blu-Ray writers. But they have only expanded the storage capacities and quality to that of a CD.

More than 200 billion CDs have been sold worldwide and it still remains the dominant format despite the growth in digital downloads.

Eventually the CD might die out just like the floppy disk did when CDs took over. But we’ll still remember the CD  as one of the biggest and most commercialized invention of the 20th century.
