Sony has recently unveiled the Vaio VGN-TZ18GN an ultra portable notebook. It’s first of its kind to run on a solid state drive(SSD) rather than hard disk drives (HDD) that have been our only option so far.

The Sony Vaio VGN-TZ18GN comes with a 11.1″screen with a 1366 x 768 resolution and weighs 1.5kg .  It has an Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 ultra low voltage (ULV) CPU running at 1.2GHz, 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a 32GB SSD drive as its sole storage device. It also comes with a DVD rewriter, which is quite a feat comparing to its size. This notebook is perfect for those on the move, using basic light applications, email and web surfing and like to have the latest cutting edge tech ware.

It’s got one of the best displays available on a notebook, offering good colour, brightness and contrast as well as watching DVDs are a breeze and also has an excellent viewing angle. Other features include a media card reader, a VGA camera installed above the screen. You’ll also find a fingerprint scanner along with some audio controls on the front end of the notebook chassis.

The build quality is quite decent. The main body is made of carbon fibre, but the screen does flex a little as it’s quiet thin. The keyboard is small, but still comfortable to type on for reasonable length periods of time and the touchpad is nice and responsive.

A pair of USB 2.0 ports joins a VGA out port, an Express Card slot, one gigabit Ethernet port and a 56k modem port on this rather barren chassis. This machine also offers Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g and Bluetooth.

SSD are great for laptop computer but their prices are still too high though :(

I totally agree! It’ not only the price but also the space. This Sony Vaio costs almost 700$ more than the 100GB HDD version. But I guess the prices and the capacities will eventually increase..
